万緑の丘のひとつをうつしたる馬頭観音ガラスまなこよ
one of the hills
of myriad green leaves
is mirrored
in the glass eyes
of the Horse-headed Kannon
蓮弁の礎石の窪みにたたへたる水に映りし空も暮れゆく
reflected in water
in the hollow of the pedestal,
lotus petal shaped,
the sky too
is darkening
カタカタと後輪のみ鳴る自転車がゆふかげのなか揺らぎつつゆく
making a clatter
with just its back wheel,
a bicycle
goes swaying along
in the night shadows
踏まれたる邪鬼はかすかに笑みてゐるこの太子堂昼でも昏し
the trodden Jaki devil statue
is faintly smiling
in this Prince Shõtoku hall
which is dark
even in the daytime
腕と同じ数だけ腋窩はあるだらう千手観音に向かひゐるとき
when I’m facing
the Thousand-armed Kannon
I conjecture
she has as many armpits
as she has arms
はちすの実垂れてこほれる池の底動かぬ鯉の寄り添ひてをり
lotus nuts
dangle and drop
to the bottom of the pond;
they lie close
to the motionless carp
のぼらざる愛染坂のかがやきぬ受話器のおくのきみの言葉に
Aizen Zaka,
that ‘amorous slope’
I won’t climb,
sparkled at your words
from deep in the phone receiver
林間に落ちゆくひかりそびらみせ劫初のおくに鵙は飛びゆく
between the trees
the sunlight is sinking –
showing its back
the strike flies away
into the beginning of this world
地獄絵図を見て
暗闇に牡鹿の舌のびらびらと地獄のひとの臓物そよぎゐる
Looking at a painting of Hell
like a stag’s tongue
hanging in the darkness,
entrails
of a human in Hell
are fluttering
浄土より地獄が良いといふひとのまなこに燃ゆる青き伽藍は
a blue Buddhist cathedral
burns in the eyes
of a man
who says Hell is better
than the Pure Land
